Florarium - a mini-greenhouse in a glass container - a fashionable interior solution among connoisseurs of original compositions from exotic flowers. A miniature garden in a transparent container provides a special ecosystem with imitation of the natural habitat of selected plants. With the help of florarium it is easy to create a particle of the natural landscape of mountain plateaus, sultry prairies or jungle in the interior of a city apartment.

Basics of composition

When making a composition, special attention is paid to such aspects as:

  • selection of containers for florarium;
  • correct selection of plant components;
  • composition of soil mixture;
  • drainage;
  • decorative elements of the composition.

It is also necessary to provide adequate lighting and ventilation in order to create comfortable microclimate conditions in a mini-greenhouse.

Types of florariums and their features

There are several types of miniature gardens in a glass vessel.

Composition "Tropics"

Florarium of this category is a beautiful imitation of tropical rainforests with a variety of plants. There is no need to look for rare species of exotic crops, the image of the jungle can be created with the help of green plantings from flower shops. Having correctly selected plants of different heights with similar requirements for soil and watering, it is not difficult to create an imitation of multi-level forest of selva.

The inhabitants of the tropics prefer high humidity. It requires a vessel with a narrowed neck or a small hole with a lid for rare airings. When making a composition, it is worth introducing a miniature pond in it in the form of a cup with water. Also, to maintain a sufficient level of humidity, a small snag is used, having previously held it in water.

Composition "Desert"

Florarium with cacti and succulents is an ideal solution if there is no possibility of thorough care for exotic pets. These representatives of the flora perfectly tolerate drought, undemanding to the conditions of the environment. For desert dwellers choose an open container, you can use an aquarium or a vase.

When choosing plants for florarium, you should consider the following recommendations of experts:

  • cultivars suitable for cultivation in the florarium are varieties that do not have high growth rates and reach a height of no more than 20 cm. The priority is given to moisture-loving representatives of the flora, who are also not afraid of restrictions in lighting;
  • you should not get involved in and experiment with the planting of cacti, as not all species of this family feel well in the conditions of a mini-garden in a glass container. The only exceptions are some tropical varieties of cacti.

When growing flowering plants in the florarium, good ventilation should be created to prevent the likelihood of rotting of the petals and stalks after the flowering period. It is necessary to remove faded flowers in time with the foliage.

Plants for mini-greenhouses

Creating florariums-tropics involves the use of the following types of plants:

  • Mini ferns Pteris, polyniyadorny, asplenum and adiantum are planted as key figures of the composition or used as an openwork supplement of more densely growing representatives of the tropics;
  • Mosses. Classic sphagnum is able to create a bright green coating of high density. In flower shops, there are also other species of moss with an unusually beautiful foliage structure and even a metallic shade;
  • Crotons. Culture is valued as the brightest in terms of shades and patterns of the type of decorative leafy plants for florariums;
  • Selaginella. Openwork and dense foliage enchants complex structure. The decorative qualities of this beautiful woman from the tropics are fully revealed in the humid environment of a mini greenhouse in glass;
  • Orchids. Most often, these capricious flowers are grown in the company of relatives or in splendid isolation. The orchid florarium is called the orchidarium, the composition requires the installation of heating and ventilation systems.

In tropical florariums, mini-violets, ground-covering fittons, mini-cyclamens, miniature varieties of ivy and rhododendrons, foxing and cryptangus, saline and creeping ficus are also relevant.

Cacti and succulents for dry desert compositions

For desert florariums select plants that tolerate dry conditions well:

  • Cacti. Rebution, Opuntia, Notocactus and Echinopsis are able to live well in conditions of minimum humidity. They give the composition maximum similarity with desert landscapes;
  • Reassured. Stone rose looks great in dry mini-gardens, it can survive in the most extreme conditions;
  • Echeveria. A classic member of the Tolstiankov family, a succulent fully reveals its enchantment in a desert florarium;
  • Agave. Succulent with aggressive character and prickles can recreate the hot landscapes of the Mexican prairies;
  • Aloe. A variety of ornamental species and varieties of this classic succulent allows you to arrange a variety of compositions with hardy and unpretentious plants;
  • Adromiscus. Low-growing succulent known fancy shapes of succulent leaves, the color of which ranges from pale green to purple hues, also found varieties of brick tonality.

For growing in the desert florarium, decorative leafy species of kalanchoe, perennial foliage, malephorus, money tree, wilds, milkweeds and greens are also suitable.

Soil for florarium

When choosing a soil for plants in a glass mini-greenhouse, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of crops. In the flower shop you can buy ready-made substrate for ferns, if you have to create a tropical flower arrangement. For succulents, special soil compositions with sand and gravel are presented. Soil mixtures for florarium are not fertilized, as this is fraught with the rapid growth of seedlings, which leads to a decrease in the decorativeness of the miniature greenhouse. When preparing the substrate independently, take equal parts of peat, perlite and vermiculite. Coarse sand and small gravel fractions are added to the composition for succulents.

The place for installation of the decorative composition is chosen depending on the requirements of the inhabitants of the florarium to the lighting conditions. With a shortage of natural light, it is easy to correct the situation with the help of special lighting devices. Plants in a tank are recommended to be planted in a centered way, placing tall individuals in the middle, and around - small ones. In this case, when the glass container is periodically turned in relation to the light source to ensure uniform growth, the decorativeness of the object will always be at its best.

It should be remembered that succulents require a lot of light, but direct rays must not be allowed to prevent the risk of burns on the leaves. Representatives of tropical flora tolerate penumbra well, so that the capacity with ferns can be set a little further from the window.

Since its own microclimate is maintained in a glass vessel, in the florarium it is easy to create a suitable temperature regime for its inhabitants. Humidity is regulated on the basis of irrigation and spraying. Succulents and cacti are watered every two weeks, they are not afraid of even a prolonged drought, and react negatively to an excess of moisture. For tropical individuals, frequent spraying and high humidity are favorable. Fertilizing plants in the florarium is not worth it, and the soil is recommended to be changed every 2 years.

To create a mini greenhouse with your own hands, you can buy a special container of interesting geometry or use glassware. For example, florarium in a glass can be a spectacular decoration of the desktop. Succulents live beautifully in an open container, they do not need high humidity. In a large glass you can plant several types of miniature plants, creating an original flower bed in the glass.
